“The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool.”
~ Lester Bangs (Almost Famous)
Walking down Nashville’s West End Avenue by myself in hair-bouffanting rain, towards a cocktail party of high-power executives and thought leaders, where I’ll know no one, I have never felt more uncool.
My breath hitches on every ascending step, and I am acutely aware of the deflated fur now clinging to my loud white boots…
The searing heat of inadequacy colors my ears and armpits red. Despite my best efforts, I’ve somehow arrived at the threshold. It’s not too late to run away, flailing arms in the air, back towards the hotel. The airport. The home I know. But in this moment, a cry wins out over the primal scream of fear:
We did not make it this far. . . to only make it this far.
Two months ago, I signed up for ImpactEleven, a speaker training and development community, with the initial hopes that a career in speaking might increase my follower count and lead to landing a Big Five book deal.
But by the time I leave on Thursday morning, I recognize this conference, as the defining moment in my life. The moment I sat in a room with 150 of the world’s most legendary rockstars. The ones willing to share the most vulnerable parts of themselves in front of thousands of people. The ones risking it all to make an impact. The ones using the only currency in this bankrupt world to change it.
