I Have Big News ! ! !
It was 7 degrees outside. Each intersecting strip of sidewalk slick with black ice. Myself and the 4-legged elder at my side worked in tandem to velcrow paw-pad to earth-bite with each step.
The apartment complex had just been hit by an blizzard of apoplyptic proportions.
My arctic jacket and furry hood, zipped and tightened in protest. A triple looped scarf protecting my sense-box from frostbite.
Some might view this scene as a pedestrian trip to the mailbox. For Lolo and me, it was a formidable quest into unknown hinterland. The risks were calculated. But the odds were stacked against us.
So there we were, bodies clenched, resolute in our mission. Cordoned to the cold. Bounding clampits aimed towards promised glory. When out of nowhere, a long vision of amethyst wrapped in black appeared from behind the mail room. Seemingly heading right for us. I wasn’t entirely convinced my addled mind wasn’t stopping short of reality given the formidable conditions. I blinked once, barely lifting my head. Then rubbed my eyes with a puffy useless mitten to be sure.
But there she was, again. Strutting closer and closer into view.
Her knee length puffer jacket was unzipped all the way down, her stride was wide and almost jovial in flavor. A smile gripped a gorgeous row of pearl white teeth. And her head bobbed to either side as she approached. Like she’d been expecting us. Like she couldn’t be more thrilled about the circumstances. I was starting to wonder whether she was entirely with us. Given our proximity and evidently contrasting experiences of the same moment.
“Well, Hey! Now who do we have here?” she proffered. Kneeling down as she tucked an amazon package under one arm to dedicate both to the delighted foot soldier.
“Oh, this is Lolo,” I responded trying not to sound like I’d just come out of wisdom teeth surgery.
“OH what a gorgeous girl!” She said, “Look at that tail goin’!”
Her energy was so open and uplifting, I couldn’t help but feel it catch fire in myself. I lowered the scarf a notch and bumbled, “Can I just say, your purple outfit is making my day right now?!”
“Oh, baby!” she excited “You KNOW it’s Purple Thursday! I ALWAYS wear purple on Thursdays! At my work, we’ve got office mugs that say Purple Thursday! My daughter’s a teacher and her whole little class at SCHOOL wears purple on Thursdays! It’s a thing! I made it a thing! We are ROYALTY, baby. And we gotta represent!”
I nearly lost my grip on the sidewalk. “I. LOVE. It,” I said. “I’m totally stealing this trend. You’re really onto something here.”
“Yeah baby! Do it! Now you two take care!”
“Thank you,” I said. “Have a great day!” Though it felt flat beneath her infinite dimension.
I walked away with a lightness in my heart that wasn’t there before. I wanted what this woman had. I wanted to live open just like she was, to every person, temperature, furry friend, and encounter. Like I had CHOSEN IT MYSELF. This woman was the living embodiment of leaning into life. And it was obvious to anyone lucky enough to know her, that life was leaning back.
As I watched her walk away, I could have sworn the ice spread into violet orbs wherever her boots touched the ground.
Nevermind it was a Tuesday afternoon.

I wanted to create a space like my Vision In Purple had for me on a cold closed-off day. An oasis of warmth and wide open arms in a world that can sometimes feel like an arctic tundra. An open valve after a long winter of frozen pipes.
I want to cultivate a community of lean-inners. That are ready to open their hearts to possibility. Ready to share their gifts with the world, and link arms in the doing. This podcast is more than just a podcast. It’s a movement.
